I recorded this album during some of the most intense and challenging years of my life. My wife gave birth to our second child, I went back to school, and I lost my brother to substance abuse and my grandmother to Alzheimer's. Making this music helped me through those times.

My brother's illness made it difficult for me to be close to him, but I cherish the peaceful, fun, and thought-provoking times that we did have. After Ben's passing, Hip-hop artist Kedric Justice wrote on Ben's social media page, "He was a good person and was loved by many. He told me to "take it to the top." Reading that reminded me of how Ben used to ask about my music when most others didn't. Since this was my most worked-on solo album by the time it was released, I thought I should be "taking it to the top," as well.

All proceeds from this album's sales go to the North Carolina Harm Reduction Coalition to support the decriminalization of substance abuse.
